It's sort of free competition to Unity or Unreal Engine, and until recently had a strong focus on 2d projects. This engine is more complicated than RPG Maker, but if you want to get out of the RPG Maker kiddie pool, it is an excellent way to go. Looks set up to make Paper Mario style games. Haven't used it myself, but it looks interesting. Again, Windows only, so you'll need to find a way around that. It's sort of like a demo version of RPG Maker VX Ace, but there's enough there to mess around with. It's also Windows only, so you'll need to use a VM or something. It actually has some real advantages over RPG Maker itself, but I would say it's slightly less user friendly.

Would love to get the full bundle but I wont be able to spend that much for a few months, once I'm working again. Is there a free version, or way to get the old one (on a mac)? I'm not looking to make some incredible game to sell or anything, just want to play around and have something fun to kill some time. Now, I don't mind paying for games, but I'm currently broke and unemployed from covid so I'm priced out of these new iterations. So, I suddenly remembered it today, and was excited to see it still exists. It was free way back when (probably late 90s, early 2000s), and I used to love just messing around making not so great games lol. Huge fan of oldschool, 16 bit JRPG style games, and suddenly remembered this from my childhood.
